One fantastic example of embracing life into older age is the movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. If you have not seen John Madden’s 2011 motion picture starring Judi Dench, Dev Patel, Bill Nighy and Maggie Smith you are SERIOUSLY missing out. This movie is suitable for all ages and really epitomizes how life can and should be lived. It is based on Deborah Moggach’s book, These Foolish Things, which is also worth checking out.
It follows the lives of seven seniors as they meet at what they believe to be an upmarket picturesque hotel in India after seeing an online advertisement and the challenges and events that take place after they arrive and see a less glamorous reality. The movie has a wonderful cast, beautiful scenery, a very fitting soundtrack and will leave you feeling incredibly wanderlust and youthful. It shows that no matter what age, picking up your life, moving half way across the world and meeting new people can also be for the over seventy something’s and not just the twenty something’s. Anything that blurs the perception of what is “acceptable” to do at a certain age should be encouraged. No one should be told that they are too old to do something if they are healthy and willing to try!
So, if you have an unfinished bucket list of places to go or things you have always wanted to try, what better time is there to start ticking those off then now? Life will not wait for anyone and just like this movie shows, you never know what wonderful adventures or people you will meet by stepping out of your comfort zone.
Neale Donald Walsh captured this idea perfectly, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone”!
