If you’ve gained weight during lock-down, don’t feel alone. According to a new study out this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association adults under shelter-in-place orders gained more than half a pound every 10 days. According to the research, not only did our eating patterns change, and did our gym workouts end, but we also lost the benefits of so-called humdrum physical activity that is part and parcel of daily living. Leanne Redman, a professor of clinical physiology at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, at Louisiana State University “running to the subway or bus stop, or stopping at the store--we burn a lot of calories in non-exercise daily living.” So, these modest changes in behaviors and lifestyle had implications for all of us.
We may not be back to our pre-covid activities and routines, but the positive implications of the vaccine rollouts and gradual reopenings are making it easier to get back into shape.
