Can we prevent or slow down dementia?

Can we prevent or slow down dementia?

Can we prevent or slow down dementia?

What can we do to keep our brains healthy? Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a neurosurgeon, and CNN's chief medical correspondent tells us how to do just that in his new book, “Keep Sharp: Build a Better Brain at Any Age.” This great read discusses the science of the brain and how we take action to stay sharp at any age.

The book is an accessible and relatable conversation about the science behind dementia and the brain. The science is made clear and personal, offering an easy read of a very complex and important topic. Dr. Gupta begins by recounting personal anecdotes and professional experiences as a neurosurgeon in the first sections of the book. The second part of the book is dedicated to proactive prevention and interventions. He walks us through things we can do to improve our brain health. Importantly, he counsels us that it is never too soon to start taking care of our brain.

Gupta estimates that 47 million Americans already show signs of dementia. The tricky thing with many types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s, which accounts for more than half the cases of dementia, is that the disease starts developing much earlier than when symptoms appear. The impact of the disease can be mitigated if we start taking immediate steps to keep our brains healthy. In his new book, Dr. Gupta provides a 12-week program of things we can do to keep our minds sharp and prevent dementia. During a CBS News interview, Gupta offered sound and valuable advice to begin making significant steps to move the needle, "The best thing you could do overall, in terms of putting it all together for brain health, would be to take a brisk walk with a close friend and talk about your problems." So get moving and challenge your brain to live your best life.
